The Dailuaine 12 Year Old is a rare gem from a Speyside distillery that is often unheard of. Founded in 1852 by William Mackenzie, Dailuaine was an instant success and was the first distillery to invent and install the distinctive pagoda-style roof. Its name, pronounced "DAL-YOO-IN," is Gaelic for "Green Valley".
This single malt began its journey with 12 years of maturation in a traditional ex-bourbon cask. To add additional layers of flavour, it was then finished for a few months in an Oloroso sherry cask. This process adds the deep characteristics of walnuts, dried fruit, and spice. With only around 2% of Dailuaine’s production bottled as single malt, this is a truly special expression.
Nose: First, you get caramel, with zesty grapefruit and a light malty character. Hints of sun-dried bananas or dates follow, along with a sweet and creamy hint of white frangipani.
Palate: On the palate, there are malty grain flavours, vanilla oak, and citrus with spice. This is followed by creamy fudge, baked apple pie, velvet tannins, hazelnuts, and almond notes from the Oloroso cask. It is nicely balanced.
Finish: A medium finish that leaves a pleasing fresh citrus fruitiness on the tongue.
